A Special Journey
My First Pencil Color Artwork
4th January 2025My First Pencil Color Artwork
4th January 2025The name of the dog is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel— I know, it's such a complicated name. When I first started making this drawing, I had no idea what the breed was called. I used to refer to it as “balo wala kutta” in Hindi, which translates to "hairy dog."
After completing the artwork, I thought to myself, “Bana tho li hai, but ya hai konsa kutta?” meaning, "I’ve made it, but what breed is it?" I decided to search for the breed's name using Google Lens, and that’s when I discovered it's called Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Even now, I struggle to pronounce it, so for me, it’s still “balo wala kutta.”
I completed this painting on February 13, 2021, after starting it around February 8, 2021. This drawing holds a special place in my heart because it was my first attempt at using pencil colors. I was genuinely shocked by how well it turned out. I used Faber-Castell color pencils with 36 shades, which I bought with my pocket money.
I made this drawing on A3 size paper, as I believe a larger sheet allows for more detailed work. The colors were quite expensive—around 400-500 INR—I still remember rushing to open the parcel the moment it arrived, this is what I did with it.
I found the reference image on Google, and the moment I saw it, I knew it was the one. The picture seemed to be calling out to me, saying, “Draw me, draw me,” so I jumped right in. At first, I was nervous—what if it didn’t turn out well? But I trusted the process and continued working on it.
For this drawing, I used a stroking technique with the pencils to capture the effortless fall of the dog’s fur. I started with the eyes and then moved on to the rest of the body. While the final drawing may not look exactly like the reference picture, it means the world to me. Consistency is key in any project you undertake. Whether the outcome is quick or takes time, there will always be a result.
This drawing significantly impacted my life by boosting my confidence and inspiring me to continue creating. Remember to stay consistent with whatever project you’re working on. Give it your best effort, and you’ll see results. The outcome might take time, but it will come. As the saying goes, “Sabr ka phal meetha hota hai,” meaning "Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet."
